What Types of Discounts Can Be Offered via a Coupon?

When creating a coupon for your clients, you can customize the type and amount of the discount. Coupons can offer a percentage off, a monetary credit, a free product, cost-price items, or free shipping.

You can also limit which products the coupon applies to. This guide explains the different types of discounts you can offer and how they can be used.

Types of Discounts

% Off

This discount reduces the total order cost by a percentage. You can set the percentage and add a description (which will display in the client’s cart). The discount applies to the entire order unless restricted to specific products. If you allow multiple uses, clients can use the code for several orders.

$ Off

A dollar-off coupon can be used as a credit towards purchases. Clients can use the code on multiple orders until the total discount value is used. The dollar amount is deducted from the order first, and then taxes are calculated on the remaining balance. You can also choose to apply the discount to shipping.

Note: If the product’s cost exceeds the coupon value, you’ll be charged the difference.

$ Off (Including Tax)

This option allows the discount to apply towards both the product and sales tax. Taxes are calculated first, and then the dollar amount is deducted from the total.

Free Product

Offer a free product by selecting specific items to include in the discount. After the order is placed, you’ll be charged the production cost of the product.

  • If you offer multiple products, clients can only order one free item unless you allow multiple uses of the code.
  • For products with multiple pages/prints (e.g., albums), the discount applies to the entire product.

Examples:

  • To offer a free wedding album, limit the product options to albums and set the coupon to be used once.
  • To offer a mix of 5x7 and 8x10 prints, limit the coupon to those items and allow multiple uses.

Cost Price

This coupon allows clients to purchase items at their production cost. You can apply it to all products or limit it to specific ones. Clients can order as many of the selected items as they like at cost price.

Free Shipping

Clients can get free ground shipping on their orders. If they upgrade to faster shipping, they’ll pay the full upgrade price. You can also specify a minimum order amount to qualify for free shipping.

Note: You’ll be charged the shipping cost from the lab.

Limiting Products

  1. You can restrict a coupon to specific products by selecting "Limit to specific products."
  2. Choose whether to include or exclude the selected products.
  3. Select the products or categories you want to limit, then click Apply.

Stackable Coupons

Coupons can be combined with other discounts. If a client uses multiple non-stackable codes, the system will automatically apply the highest value discount. Stackable coupons can be added on top of a non-stackable one, and the discount is calculated from the original total price (before any discounts).

By using these various coupon options, you can tailor promotions to meet your client’s needs while managing product limitations and discount stacking.
